Life at AD Offshore: Andy Partlow

Introducing our brand new series, More Than Just a Job: Life at AD Offshore, a collection of interviews with the people that make up our business!

We’re always striving to be as transparent with our customers and clients as possible, so we thought it’d be a great idea to take a look behind the curtain and see what makes AD Offshore tick – the people, the culture and our approach to life across the islands.

This week, we’re kicking off the series with Andy Partlow, Managing Director at AD Offshore. Let’s dive into his story:

What inspired you to join AD Offshore and how did you first hear about us?

“Relocating back to the UK from Guernsey wasn’t an easy decision. I worked with Ian (Group Managing Director) in 2005, and based on that relationship, AD was my only choice.”

Can you share a standout moment from your first week/month here?

“Yes! In my first week, Ian and I had a coffee catch-up, I was initially recruited to work in accountancy and finance recruitment in North Birmingham but after discussing my life in Guernsey, we decided to set up an Offshore division, a life changing event in itself!”

What were your first impressions of the team and the company culture?

“Everyone was really friendly, I remember that, it was an easy business to fit into, which can’t be said for all recruitment businesses.

“We were really small at that time with circa 12 employees from memory! Good cultures adapt and evolve over time in my opinion, but it was clear everyone was down to earth and happy go lucky, but motivated to do well.”

How has working at AD impacted your life?

“In every way possible really. I have developed lifelong friendships, it has helped me create a brilliant life for me and my family whilst enabling me to continually learn, progress and develop.

“I love the business that I lead and everyone in it. If you can find an employer and job that complements your personal life, keep hold of it!”

How has your role evolved since you started?

“My role has developed a lot in the last 10 years. I started as a Manager back in 2015 working on my own, developing the Offshore division and I’m now Managing Director, helping lead an amazing team of 18 people. That all said, I’m still a recruiter at heart and love that aspect of my job.”

What skills have you gained or developed during your time with us?

“Far too many to list! Recruitment is a challenging industry, far more than those outside of the sector give it credit for. I’d like to think though that my leadership skills and remaining calm in a crisis are skills that I have developed over the years, and I always try to create opportunity for those around me.”

Tell us about a project or achievement you’re particularly proud of?

“In my opinion, with support from those around me, I have contributed to building an amazing business and team of people who I love spending time with and who make me proud every day, what bigger achievement is there in the workplace?”

How has working here helped you grow personally or professionally?

“Hugely. We have achieved a lot in the last 10 years, and whilst I’m fundamentally the same person as when I joined, I have learned a lot! We have had so many successes, but also a lot of challenges, as all businesses do, and it is those challenges that you really learn from.”

What’s your favourite part of your job?

“Three stand-out things for me, which are all people and relationship-driven. Seeing my team grow, develop and achieve both in and out of the workplace. Helping candidates progress and develop in their careers and helping clients on particularly difficult roles to fill, and watching their businesses grow and succeed.”
