How is Guernsey Recruitment Changing?

As a leader in the Guernsey recruitment space, we’re always tracking how employment and recruitment across the island is changing year-on-year.

It’s this commitment to better understanding our local markets that helps us be so effective for both candidates and clients.

Since employment is such a fast-moving landscape, it’s also important for employers to understand where the market is heading so their own recruitment is more efficient.

With this in mind, we’re examining the Guernsey recruitment market and what that might mean for Guernsey employment going forward.

What is happening in Guernsey recruitment right now?

According to official data from Guernsey government, there are around 31,700 people employed or self-employed in Guernsey, a 1% increase year-on-year and a 1.8% increase over the last five years.

At the same time, there are 2,180 employers operating on the island across various sectors. As usual, the core sectors remain construction and financial/insurance activities, although sectors such as education and administration have seen increases over the last five years.

With 23.5% of all employment roles situated in finance, legal or accounting roles, professional services continues to be the most prominent industry on island, meaning there’s plenty of opportunities for professionals that want to work with globally recognised organisations.

Median earnings also continue to be higher in Guernsey at £42,180 during 2024. This is 6.4% higher in nominal terms than the same time last year and represents the potential for earnings that is attracting so many professionals.

Finally, with only 0.7% of the working age population unemployed, there’s a significant candidate market for employers, although a large proportion of it is recognised as ‘passive’.
