Life at AD Offshore: Alexandra Wallace

Introducing our brand new series, More Than Just a Job: Life at AD Offshore, a collection of interviews with the people that make up our business!

We’re always striving to be as transparent with our customers and clients as possible, so we thought it’d be a great idea to take a look behind the curtain and see what makes AD Offshore tick – the people, the culture and our approach to life across the islands.

This week, we’re sitting down with Alexandra Wallace, Manager at AD Offshore. Let’s dive into her story:

What inspired you to join AD Offshore and how did you first hear about us?

“I already knew Steve and Sarah well through mutual friends, so I was familiar with AD. During the first lockdown, I returned to the Island and moved in with my parents, who happened to live next door to Sarah’s best friend. Since Sarah was in a bubble with my neighbour, we had a socially distanced drink on the driveway as restrictions eased. That’s when Sarah mentioned the role to me, and from that moment, it was practically a done deal.”

Can you share a standout moment from your first week/month here?

“I think it would have to be having to call in sick after my first night out with AD and lying in bed with a terrible hangover receiving a call from Shannon to tell me I had my first offer for my candidate. Hangover was cured and the offer was accepted!”

What were your first impressions of the team and the company culture?

“I had worked in recruitment for a few years in London and worked in some heavy, sales driven environments where it was super competitive, so I liked the fact that coming into AD it wasn’t too heavy on the KPI front. It was a nice, relaxed environment in which you were encouraged to reach your potential. The culture here is amazing, and I’ve definitely made some friends for life since joining.”

How has working at AD impacted your life?

“It has had a hugely positive impact on my life. I’ve travelled to incredible places like Sitges and Ibiza, sailed around Croatia on a private yacht, enjoyed private boxes at the races, dined at top restaurants across the UK, and so much more. On top of that, I also bought and renovated a house. It’s a life-changing job, but ultimately, you get out what you put in.”

How has your role evolved since you started?

“I started as a consultant and now I am building out my own team, so it has evolved quite a bit over the past years. No two days are the same, so it is an ever-changing role.”

What skills have you gained or developed during your time with us?

“I’d say I’ve developed my people skills. This job is about much more than just recruitment. I’ve listened to people share their marriage struggles, family conflicts, and personal challenges. It’s not a role you can simply switch on and off, it involves real people and real lives.”

Tell us about a project or achievement you’re particularly proud of?

“I would say I am proud of being one of the fastest standing starts at AD.”

What’s your favourite part of your job?

“The best part is the people and helping them find new opportunities. It’s always rewarding to match a candidate with the right role and help them achieve what they’re looking for. Knowing I’ve made a difference and that they’ve trusted me with their career move is what does it for me.”

How would you describe the culture at AD in three words?

“Fun, rewarding, exciting.”

What’s the most surprising or unexpected thing you’ve learned while working here?

“People think recruitment is easy, it is not. I’ve been a counsellor and friend to many candidates going through difficult times, which people on the outside don’t see.”

If you could give one piece of advice to someone joining AD, what would it be?

“My piece of advice would be this is not an easy industry. Thick skin, the desire to do well and self-motivation are key.”

What’s your favourite team tradition or event?

“It must be Christmas. Every office comes together and lets loose, it’s a good time to reconnect with colleagues who I don’t see that often.”
